Самое страшное наводнение Петербурга
Оно поставило рекорд по утопленникам
В XVIII веке наводнения в Петербурге были делом обычным. Практически каждый год Нева выходила из берегов. И нередко по нескольку раз за осень. Но то, что произошло 10 сентября (по старому стилю) 1777 года, побило все рекорды. Никогда ещё Петербург не сталкивался с таким смертоносным разгулом стихии.
Сравниться с потопом 1777 года может лишь наводнение 1824 года. Но и над ним трагедия XVIII века одержала печальный верх по количеству утонувших людей. Никогда ни до, ни после 1777 года не гибло столько жителей Петербурга, как в тот трагический день. Природный катаклизм, произошедший при «матушке Екатерине II», остался в истории города, как самое страшное, самое губительное для петербуржцев наводнение в истории.
Почему же именно это затопление привело к таким трагическим последствиям? Ведь уровень подъёма воды в нём был на целый метр ниже, чем, например, во время потопа 1824 года! Дело в том, что все прочие крупные петербургские наводнения начинались днём, при свете. А вот потоп 1777 года начался затемно, в 4 утра. Спящие жители были застигнуты врасплох и не смогли заранее укрыться где-нибудь на возвышенных местах. А те, кто выбирался из затопленных каморок, оказывался в полной темноте. Люди просто не видели, куда плыть, где можно спастись...
Итак, рано утром 10 сентября 1777 года вода в Неве стала быстро прибывать. Первыми под удар попали западная оконечность Васильевского острова (так называемые районы Галерная гавань и Чекуши) и Коломна. Именно в этих районах проживало наиболее бедное население столицы.
Здесь, в ветхих лачугах, подвалах, полуземлянках жили рыбаки, чернорабочие, грузчики, мастеровые. Те, кто не успел вовремя выбраться из подвалов и землянок (а пробуй-ка успеть, когда стихия на тебя обрушилась спросонья!), были обречены — бурлящая масса потопа блокировала двери, не позволяя выбраться наружу, а в окошки и щели хлестал поток невской воды. Подвалы и землянки были затоплены буквально за несколько минут — вместе с большинством их обитателей.
Не лучше была ситуация и для хозяев всевозможных лачуг и хибарок. Все эти хлипкие, сделанные из жердей и гнилых досок строения не выдерживали напора воды и разваливались, как карточные домики. Обитатели избушек либо тонули, либо погибали под обломками зданий.
Но и те, кому удавалось выбраться из землянки или лачуги, оказывались посреди полной темноты. Никакого уличного освещения (да тем более в бедных кварталах) тогда не было, а на небе ни звёздочки — всё затянуто тучами.
Люди барахтались в холодной воде, как слепые, не видя, за что можно ухватиться, куда нужно выбираться. Многие погибали, не зная, что их спасение было совсем рядом — крепкое высокое дерево или сорвавшаяся с цепи лодка. Они их просто не видели!
На рассвете потоки воды добрались до самого сердца города. Императрица Екатерина II сама наблюдала за разгулом стихии из окон Зимнего дворца. Вот как она описывала то злосчастное утро в письме к своему немецкому корреспонденту — философу Фридриху Гримму: «Поднялся ветер, который порывисто ворвался в окно моей комнаты. В воздухе носилось всё, что угодно: черепица, железные листы, стёкла. Нева представляла собой зрелище разрушения Иерусалима. На набережной громоздились трехмачтовые купеческие корабли, выброшенные потоками воды...»
Почти по всем улицам столицы передвигаться можно было только в шлюпках. Обер-полицмейстер Петербурга Николай Чичерин, например, для доклада императрице проплыл на лодке от своего дома на Невском проспекте (дом этот, кстати, сохранился — в нём сейчас размещается гостиница «Талеон») до Зимнего дворца.
Буйство стихии было невообразимое. Поваленные деревья, ограды, разрушенные деревянные дома, выброшенные на берег корабли. Очевидцы припоминали курьёзные случаи. Одна изба потоком воды была перенесена с одного берега Невы на другой. Торговое судно, гружёное яблоками, было выброшено на 10 метров от берега в лес. Все торговые лавки размыло, товар был перепорчен, купцы понесли огромные убытки. Уцелел лишь мощный каменный Гостиный двор. По всему Петербургу и окрестностям плавали трупы людей и животных.
Несколько часов продолжалось неистовство взбунтовавшейся Невы. Наконец в полдень вода стала уходить. Нева начала возвращаться в свои берега. Но ещё весь день 10 сентября жителям города приходилось ходить буквально по колено в воде.
Урон от потопа был страшный: строений, имущества, товаров погибло на гигантскую по тем временам сумму в несколько миллионов рублей. Разрушены сотни домов. Погибло несколько тысяч людей (точное число, конечно же, установить не удалось).
Когда вода схлынула и город постепенно стал входить в привычный ритм жизни, наступило время «разбора полётов». Не смотря на свой шутливо-беззаботный тон, которым императрица живописала наводнение в письмах своим европейским друзьям-философам, в реальности Екатерина была сильно напугана. А предварительные доклады о размерах ущерба и о количестве погибших людей повергли государыню в шок.
Срочно нужно было искать виноватых. Так уж повелось на Руси, что виновный всегда должен быть — даже виновный в наводнении! Таким «козлом отпущения» для Екатерины стал обер-полицмейстер Чичерин. Она посчитала, что действия столичной полиции, отвечавшей за организацию спасения людей, были недостаточно оперативны и профессиональны.
Претензии государыни были несправедливы — Чичерин сделал всё, что можно было предпринять в такой ситуации. Но императрица хотела назначить виновного. Чичерин был вызван во дворец. Когда он вошёл в кабинет, императрица ехидно-раздражённо приветствовала его: «Так вот он — тот, по чьей вине я лишилась стольких моих подданных!»
Поглумившись в той же манере над несчастным обер-полицмейстером ещё какое-то время, Екатерина отказалась выслушивать его объяснения и выгнала прочь. Вскоре Чичерин был уволен в отставку.
Но, к счастью, Екатерина не ограничилась одной «показательной поркой». Для того, чтобы избежать столь трагических катастроф, решено было ввести, как бы мы сейчас сказали, службу заблаговременного предупреждения. До этого такой практики в Петербурге не было.
21 сентября 1777 года императрица повелела учредить «знаки и сигналы, по которым жители должны были принимать спасительные меры».

Летний сад. Перестройка
Во время потопа 1777 года были полностью разрушены фонтаны Летнего сада, возведённые ещё при Петре I и Анне Иоанновне. Кстати, именно от этих фонтанов пошло название реки Фонтанка, омывающей Летний сад.
Фонтаны решили не восстанавливать, как по причине экономических соображений, так и в соответствии с новыми тенденциями в садовом искусстве, которые разделяла следившая за модой императрица. Сама Екатерина II не раз говорила, что она терпеть не может фонтаны. «Что это за тирания, заставляющая воду течь неестественным образом?» — писала она Вольтеру.
Императрица предпочитала пейзажные, так называемые «английские» парки, где нет фонтанов и стриженых деревьев, где природа имеет свой естественный вид.
Поэтому разрушенные наводнением 1777 года фонтаны были окончательно разобраны, и Летний сад принял тот пейзажный облик, который являлся одним из символов Петербурга-Ленинграда в XIX-XX веках. Правда, совсем недавно, после реставрации 2009-2012 гг., разрушенные полтора века назад фонтаны были снова восстановлены. Летний сад вернулся, так сказать, в «допотопные» времена. Пейзажный, «пушкинский» парк вновь уступил место регулярному, «петровскому» парку. Хорошо это или плохо — пусть каждый решает для себя сам…
Пострадавший символ
Во время наводнения 1777 года пострадал знаменитый символ Петербурга — ангел на шпиле Петропавловского собора. Ураганным ветром ангелу оторвало крылья и погнуло фигуру.
Сразу после окончания потопа ангел был восстановлен, но он стал выглядеть совсем иначе. Он уменьшился в весе и размере. А главным решением, позволившим в дальнейшем избежать подобных проблем, стало превращение фигуры в своего рода флюгер. Ведь до 1777 года ангел был не просто больше, но и закреплён, что называется, «намертво».
